Remembering Kobe

On January 26th, the entire world stopped in shock over the tragic death of a prominent NBA player, Kobe Bryant. Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash in the hills of Calabasas, California.

The event shocked and saddened other major sports leagues like the NFL and MLB and many athletes and fans.

Bryant’s off the fieldwork was equally as extensive as his career on the court. Bryant trained and continued to train some of the biggest stars in the game today. His presence inspired many of the stars of today to put forth Bryant’s Mamba Mentality. His tireless passion for the game of basketball was something that made Bryant different than many athletes in his generation.

Many students shared their thoughts on Bryant’s death and the impact of his legacy. “I was just as shocked as anyone, Bryant was just one of those players where you thought he would be there until he was 80, it was just a huge loss in the world as a whole,” said Connor Mckellips.

“I honestly thought it was not true because of the cause and the timing. It was surreal at the time and is just as surreal now,” said Tyler Starcevich.

“It was such a tragedy to see such a huge star be gone in such a freak accident and be taken too soon,” said Jessica Barr.

“So sad to see him and [eight] others were taken in this horrific act. I mourn for his wife and other kids and hope to see [the family] get better,” said Kylie Amunson.

“I was shocked to see it. I bet like half the world was with me on seeing the news. People who liked basketball or did not even watch knew Bryant and had a story that was tide to him. Rest in Peace,” said George Gray.

Sadly, not only was Bryant involved in the crash, but his daughter Gianna and 7 others died during the helicopter ride. Bryant was a five-time NBA champion, earned an NBA record 15 All-NBA selections, and 12 for All-Defensive teams. He led the league in scoring twice, won the Slam Dunk contest and won the All-Star game MVP 4 different times. He was also an Olympic Gold medalist and won an Academy Award for his short film Dear Basketball.

While this is such a huge loss to the NBA, Kobe managed to touch the hearts of many. His impact will be felt forever. During times of grief, it is important to not reflect on the sadness. Rather, happy memories that were formed should be cherished.
