Yik Yak is an app available to Apple users that provides a space for its users to post anonymously. There are college chats as well as other community chats you can join. However, you can only add one college at a time, which cannot be changed for 90 days after each change. Some of the other community chats include Roommate Rants, Confessions, and College Basketball. Some communities are open to everyone while some are only open to college students. The main point of Yik Yak is to be able to post anything while remaining unknown.
How does Yik Yak work? Here are some simple steps on how to join and use the app.
- Download the app
- Create a profile
- Join a college or interest-based chat
- Click on the home icon on the bottom left, then the three lines on the top left to navigate to which community you want to post in.
- Click the community you want, then the plus icon near the bottom right to create a post. You can also change the community you’d like to post to while you are drafting your message
- After you write your post you can either select “Anonymous” or your profile
- You can add an abundance of things to your profile such as a stock picture, picture from your camera roll, a video from your camera roll, a question, and a link. You can also change if you’d like to be able to receive comments on your post or DMs.
- Now it’s time to post. Congratulations!
One unique thing about Yik Yak is that you can gain “Yakarma.” Yakarma are points that you receive from upvotes and comments. Much like Reddit, upvotes are when you or others click the up arrow on a post. You can upvote or downvote all posts and comments on posts. These serve the same purpose as “like” and “dislike” buttons.
Congratulations you now have the honor of seeing what other students at this school are complaining about. Have fun!
