The UW-Stout Blue Devils (2-12) faced a tough outing on Friday, falling to the UW-La Crosse Eagles (13-2) in both games of a doubleheader at Copeland Park. The Eagles took Game 1 with a decisive 13-2 victory in seven innings, followed by a high-scoring 16-11 win in Game 2.
Game 1: UW-La Crosse 13, UW-Stout 2
UW-La Crosse jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, cruising to a 13-2 win in the opener. The Eagles scored in six of seven innings, including a four-run fourth, powered by a potent offense that racked up 14 hits, including three home runs.
Justin Sedin provided a highlight for the Blue Devils, hitting a solo home run in the fourth and adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth to finish with two RBI. Austin Miller chipped in with a double, but Stout managed just five hits total. Drew Buss (0-2) took the loss, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings.
Game 2: UW-La Crosse 16, UW-Stout 11
The nightcap turned into a slugfest, with both teams combining for 27 runs and 27 hits. UW-Stout showed resilience, battling back from multiple deficits, but ultimately fell 16-11 in a nine-inning affair. The Blue Devils smashed five home runs, with Leyten Bowers leading the way, going 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI. Billy Jones, Justin Sedin, Austin Miller, and AJ Kargel also went yard, helping Stout post 11 runs on 11 hits.
The Eagles countered with 16 runs on 16 hits. UW-La Crosse jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one inning and led 6-5 after three innings of play. Stout scored five runs in the fourth, highlighted by Bowers’ three-run homer to take a 10-6 advantage. However, UWL countered with five in the bottom half of the inning to take an 11-10 lead and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth.
