The UW-Stout women’s tennis team kicked off its spring season with a solid performance in a doubleheader at the Rogers Tennis Club, earning a 5-2 victory over Bethany Lutheran College before facing a tough Division II opponent in Bemidji State.
Match 1: UW-Stout 5, Bethany Lutheran 2
The Blue Devils set the tone early by securing the doubles point with dominant performances. The No. 1 doubles team of Molly Garber and Ashlyn Dellemann cruised to a 6-1 victory, while the No. 3 duo of Odessa Barreyro and Aspen Johnson matched that scoreline to give Stout an early lead.
In singles play, Barreyro continued her strong day with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to push the Blue Devils ahead 2-0. Dellemann followed with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles. The Vikings responded by winning at No. 2 and No. 5 singles to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Johnson came through in the clutch at No. 3 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory to clinch the match for UW-Stout. Garber capped off the match with a steady 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, securing the 5-2 victory.
Match 2: Bemidji State 7, UW-Stout 0
The Blue Devils put up a strong fight against a formidable Division II opponent in Bemidji State. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Barreyro and Johnson battled hard, while Dellemann delivered a competitive effort at No. 4 singles. Despite the final score, UW-Stout showed resilience and determination throughout the match. Senior Lyndsey Krist had the highlight performance of the match, defeating her Division 2 counterpart 8-7 (9) in an exhibition match.
The Blue Devils will look to build on this experience as they continue their spring season. Up next, Stout will travel to Ripon College on Saturday, April 5th, to take on the Red Hawks at 11 a.m.
