Disney released their live action remake of the beloved classic Snow White on the 21st of March after the news that it was delayed a year. With the news of Rachel Ziegler being cast as the titular character, the film was already getting bad press. Then the news that they didn’t cast little people to play the seven dwarfs surfaced, and on top of that the interviews that brought to light the changes that the film made.
Needless to say, this film did not have the best press going into its premiere. However, after watching the film, it’s safe to say that I believe it’s not really that bad. The highlight of the film is hands down Rachel Ziegler; her performance shows that she was born to be a star. The music was also a highlight for the most part. The songs that they added for the film are very catchy and well-made, excluding the Evil Queen’s song. As for the songs that are from the original, the music was kind of lackluster. In the dwarves’ song “Hi Ho,” they used so much auto tune it felt like it was AI generated. However, “Whistle While You Work” is probably the best song in the film, besides the use of auto tune for the dwarfs.
Easily the worst part of the film is the horrendous miscast of Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Not only can she not act, but she cannot carry a tune to save her life. Her line delivery is worse than the average student film actors and her portrayal of the Evil Queen didn’t seem evil at all. The way she played her felt like she was just petty, and it wasn’t really giving the presence of someone to fear. Overall, my rating of the film falls to 2.5/5. Not the best score but definitely not the worst. This film is one you can skip out on, but personally, I highly recommend you go watch it.
